Crafting a gentle weaning timetable for your six month old

Updated: Apr 16

Introducing solid foods to your baby is a significant milestone in their development journey. At around six months old, babies start showing signs of readiness for solid foods, alongside their breastmilk or formula feeds.

Crafting a gentle and well-structured weaning timetable is essential to ensure a smooth transition for both you and your little one.

Before diving into a weaning timetable, it's crucial to recognise signs that your baby is ready for solids. Look for signs such as sitting up with support, showing interest in what you're eating, and having good head control. Download our free weaning guide for more information on this:

While introducing solid foods, remember that milk or formula will still be the primary source of nutrition for your baby. Solid foods are complementary to breast milk or formula, not replacements.

Week 1-2: The Exploration Phase. Start with single-ingredient, smooth purees such as mashed banana, avocado, or sweet potato. You can also jump straight into finger foods if you are choosing a baby led weaning method. Begin with one meal a day, preferably at a time when your baby is alert and not overly hungry or tired.

Week 3-4: Expanding the Palette. Introduce new flavours and textures gradually. Experiment with different fruits, vegetables, and cereals. Offer a variety of foods while keeping an eye out for any signs of allergies or intolerances.

Gradually build consistency. By this stage, aim to increase to two meals a day, alongside milk feeds. Continue to introduce a diverse range of foods, including protein-rich options like chicken, lentils, or tofu.

Advancing Texture and Frequency. Progress to mashed or finely chopped foods to encourage chewing and development of oral motor skills. Aim for three meals a day, incorporating a mix of fruits, vegetables, grains, and proteins.

Listen to Your Baby. Throughout the weaning process, pay attention to your baby's cues and appetite. Let them take the lead in how much they eat and when they're ready to progress to more textured foods.

Flexibility and Patience. Every baby is unique, and their readiness for solids may vary. Be patient and flexible, adjusting the timetable according to your baby's preferences and developmental pace.

Crafting a good weaning timetable for your six-month-old involves a balance of patience, observation, and gentle guidance. By gradually introducing a variety of nutritious foods while maintaining the importance of milk or formula feeds, you can lay the foundation for healthy eating habits that will benefit your baby for years to come. Remember to enjoy this exciting journey of exploration and discovery with your little one!
